Day of Programming

DIFFICULT FACULTY OR CONSTRUCTIVE DEBATE?
Time:                      9:45 AM to 11:00 AM
Location:               M2 - Marquis Salons 12-13

Faculty can be industrious, determined, and strong promoters of their
positions. Whatever the position, faculty often see their efforts as
benefiting the institution and the communities they inhabit. Institutional
leaders may see these efforts as obstinacy that can wreak havoc on their
ability to foster institutional progress and health. This leader-to-leader
session explores what academic leaders can do when individual or collective
faculty resistance risks scuttling long-term institutional objectives.
Gail Hackett, Virginia Commonwealth University
Wendy Raymond, Davidson College
Facilitator: Martha Potvin, ACAO Board of Directors, Springfield College

JOINT PRESIDENTS/CAOS LUNCHEON:
THE SECRET TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
Time:                    11:45 AM to 1:15 PM
Location:              M2 - Marquis Salons 5-6

TAKING CHARGE: FUNDRAISING FOR ACADEMIC LEADERS
Time:                    2:00 PM to 3:15 PM
Location:             M2 - Marquis Salons 12-13

Three-quarters of chief academic officers report that limited resources are a
major hurdle for achieving institutional goals. With such high stakes, a closer
look at fundraising’s potential is in order. Effective academic fundraisers
often sidestep the resource reallocation maze that can be as politically
challenging as it is difficult. How do they do it? What separates the best CAO
fundraisers from those who are merely adequate? What can CAOs start
doing now to be more effective with donors? These questions and others
will be explored during the session.
Michael Sinkus, Marts & Lundy
Introduction: Paul Starkey, ACAO Board of Directors, Pennsylvania College of
Technology

PROMISING FACULTY ROLES IN RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION
Time: 3:30 PM to 4:45
Location: PMM2 - Marquis Salons 12-13

There is a growing sense that faculty involvement in student recruitment
and retention could boost enrollment and improve student persistence.
Early research suggests that faculty interest and effectiveness in these
efforts varies. This panel session considers the wide range of approaches
taken by institutions and identifies common themes for successful faculty
engagement.
Angela Scott Ferencin Angel, Lehigh University
David Artis, University of California at San Diego
Penny MacCormack, ACUE
Facilitator: Kevin Carman, ACAO Board of Directors, University of Nevada at
Reno
