ACAO Free Webinar Discussion - Future of Tenure
Tuesday, February 27, 2018, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EDT
Category: Upcoming Events

Surveys indicate that less than a third of the instructional staff in higher education today are tenured or on the tenure track today. The remaining 70% of the faculty serve in “adjunct” or “contingent” positions holding part-time or full-time, term contracts.  Of these, about half are appointed for only a semester-long period at a time.  All indicators point toward this trend continuing among all institutional types-public, private, and two-year.

As institutions rely increasingly on temporary instructional staff (with some institutions reframing or even eliminating tenure) and with public discourse focusing on tenure as an outdated model of job security, Chief Academic Officers face increasing pressures to innovate and adopt new strategies regarding the nature of their instructional staff.

ACAO invites you to join fellow CAOs in an informal, robust conversation about the current and future state of tenure in higher education

The following questions serve as a spring board for the conversation. Participants are also encouraged to offer topics for discussion.

  • As a CAO, what benefits of tenure do you believe must be protected?  What strategies do you employ to communicate and retain these benefits?
  • At an institutional level, how can you make tenure benefit students as much as faculty?
  • Can you share approaches you have or are considering to meet instructional needs beyond the awarding of tenure?  To meet research goals?
  • If you could wave a magic wand, what would you change tomorrow about the makeup of your instructional staff?

Tuesday, February 27 at 12:00 Noon Eastern to join this informal conversation with colleagues about one of the most pressing issues in higher education today.
