ACAO Free Coffee Hour Discussion!!

Two recent developments have made labor relations, and particularly the unionization of academic groups, a topic of increased interest in higher education.  First, reliance on non-tenure-track faculty, both part-time and full-time, has increased, and, with it, the voice of such faculty on campuses.  Second, in 2016, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) overturned their 2004 decision that graduate student assistants could not unionize.  There has been an increase, as a result, in union activity on private campuses and, with it, in the courts, as the legitimacy of organizing drives is questioned.

The Chief Academic Officer will inevitably be involved in campus academic labor movements.  The webinar will provide a private forum for discussion of the following questions:

  1. What is the role of the CAO during an organizing campaign and, if it is successful, in the negotiation of the first contract and beyond.  How does this specific role interact with the broader responsibilities of the CAO?
  2. What limitations are there on CAO actions in a unionized environment?  What, in particular, are the financial implications of these constraints?
  3. How does a CAO gain the necessary skills for labor relations on a campus where academic unions are new?  What resources does s/he have, both on and off campus?
