Surveys indicate that less than a third of the instructional staff in higher education today are tenured or on the tenure track today. The re maining 70% of the faculty serve in “adjunct” or “conting ent” positions holding part-time or full-time, term contracts. Of th ese, about half are appointed for only a semester-long period at a time. A ll indicators point toward this trend continuing among all institutional ty pes-public, private, and two-year.
As institutions rely increasingly on temporary instructional staff (with some institutions refra ming or even eliminating tenure) and with public discourse focusing on tenu re as an outdated model of job security, Chief Academic Officers face incre asing pressures to innovate and adopt new strategies regarding the nature o f their instructional staff.
