John McCarthy is Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After a year as Acting and then Interim Provost, his appointment was regularized in July 2018. Prior to being named Provost, he was Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School.

A native of Massachusetts and a graduate of Harvard (BA) and MIT (PhD), McCarthy joined the faculty of the UMass Linguistics Department in 1985, after stints at UT Austin and AT&T Bell Labs. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and several National Science Foundation grants, and he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Linguistic Society of America, and the Cognitive Science Society. Provost McCarthy is a recipient of the University’s highest teaching award, and his former PhD students honored him with a Festschrift entitled Phonological Argumentation: Essays on Evidence and Motivation.
